Proxy Provider Shutdowns of 2026: Full Timeline, Data & Migration Map
Last updated: July 22, 2026. We keep this page current as events develop — link to it, cite it, and check back.
2026 is the year the proxy industry broke. In six months, more than a dozen residential proxy brands went offline — some seized by law enforcement, some silently abandoned, some "temporarily paused" with no explanation. Millions of prepaid dollars were stranded. This page is the running record: what shut down, when, why, and where the users went.
The timeline
Date | Event | Status today |
|---|---|---|
January 28, 2026 | Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) and law-enforcement partners dismantle the IPIDEA residential-proxy network — the shared backend behind at least 13 consumer brands, including PIA S5 Proxy, 922 S5, ABC Proxy, LunaProxy, Cherry Proxy and IP2World. | Network dismantled; brands offline |
Late January 2026 | piaproxy.com goes dark permanently: website, dashboard and the S5 desktop client all stop working. Prepaid balances become unrecoverable. | Permanently offline |
February 2026 | First clone sites appear (pia5proxy.com and similar), claiming to be "the same team." None restore old balances. | Clones active — treat with caution |
Spring 2026 | IP2World's domain is dropped and re-registered. 922 S5 remains offline; its Chrome extension and integrations still point to a dead service. | Original services gone |
June 28, 2026 | 9Proxy goes down: website and desktop app dead, active sessions dropped, prepaid balances inaccessible. Support goes silent. | Outage begins |
June 29, 2026 | 9Proxy posts an identical short "service disruption" note on Facebook and BlackHatWorld. No cause, no ETA. | — |
~July 15, 2026 | 9Proxy's website stabilizes (~99.9% uptime again), but new purchases remain paused and no root cause has ever been published. | Partially restored, sales paused |
What the link graph shows (original data)
We pulled full Ahrefs backlink exports for the affected domains in July 2026 and analyzed them. Two findings stand out.
The dead brands were propped up by spam
Share of backlinks flagged as spam by Ahrefs, per domain:
Domain | Backlinks analyzed | Flagged as spam | Spam share |
|---|---|---|---|
7,333 | 5,027 | 69% | |
1,600 | 799 | 50% | |
1,248 | 609 | 49% | |
437 | 148 | 34% |
For comparison, established providers typically sit far below these levels. Aggressive paid-link growth was part of the playbook for the whole IPIDEA brand family — worth remembering next time a provider's marketing looks "everywhere at once."
The internet hasn't noticed they're dead
We manually checked the top 60 highest-authority pages that link to these four domains. 49 of them (82%) still link to the dead services — including active reviews and tutorials on major tech sites. Thousands of readers per month are still being routed to providers that cannot take their money — or worse, to clone sites that will.
Where the users went
Former PIA S5 users split three ways: clones (risky — no balance recovery, unknown operators), general residential providers, and partner integrations that retained access to the original PIA residential network. ProxyUniverse is among the latter — genuine PIA-network residential GB from $1.35.
Former 922 S5 users mostly moved to per-IP residential sellers with SOCKS5 support and antidetect-browser integrations.
Former 9Proxy users are migrating to per-IP model providers; HideProxy (a Hidemium-adjacent project) has absorbed a visible share, alongside multi-provider platforms.
The cautious majority learned the real lesson of 2026: never depend on a single provider. Keep a funded backup on a different network. Our catalog exists precisely so you can switch networks without switching tools.
How not to get burned again — a checklist
Don't prepay more than a month of usage to any provider, no matter how big.
Check the backlink profile before trusting a provider: a spam-heavy profile (like the 49–69% above) signals bought reputation.
Beware of "same team" clones after a shutdown. If they can't restore your old balance, they can't prove they're the same operator.
Keep a second provider funded and tested. A backup you've never run in production is not a backup.
Watch for silence. Every 2026 casualty went quiet on support before going dark. Silence is the first symptom.
FAQ
Is PIA S5 Proxy shut down?
The public piaproxy.com storefront is offline following the January 2026 IPIDEA disruption. The underlying PIA residential network still exists and is accessible through official partner integrations such as ProxyUniverse.
Is 9Proxy dead?
Not dead, but not healthy: the site is back up since mid-July 2026, new purchases remain paused, and no explanation has been given for the 2.5-week blackout.
What was IPIDEA?
A residential-proxy network that operated as the shared backend for at least 13 consumer brands. It was dismantled on January 28, 2026 by Google's Threat Intelligence Group and law-enforcement partners.
Can I get my prepaid balance back from a dead provider?
In practice, no. No IPIDEA-family brand has restored balances, and clone sites asking you to "wait 4–6 months" have delivered nothing so far.
Who is still safe to use?
No one can promise a provider won't die — that's the point. Diversify: buy from a catalog with multiple independent networks, so one shutdown never stops your work again.
