What the link graph shows (original data)
We pulled full Ahrefs backlink exports for the affected domains in July 2026 and analyzed them. Two findings stand out.
The dead brands were propped up by spam

For comparison, established providers typically sit far below these levels. Aggressive paid-link growth was part of the playbook for the whole IPIDEA brand family — worth remembering next time a provider's marketing looks "everywhere at once."
The internet hasn't noticed they're dead
We manually checked the top 60 highest-authority pages that link to these four domains. 49 of them (82%) still link to the dead services — including active reviews and tutorials on major tech sites. Thousands of readers per month are still being routed to providers that cannot take their money — or worse, to clone sites that will.
Where the users went
Former PIA S5 users split three ways: clones (risky — no balance recovery, unknown operators), general residential providers, and partner integrations that retained access to the original PIA residential network. ProxyUniverse is among the latter — genuine PIA-network residential GB from $1.35.
Former 922 S5 users mostly moved to per-IP residential sellers with SOCKS5 support and antidetect-browser integrations.
Former 9Proxy users are migrating to per-IP model providers; HideProxy (a Hidemium-adjacent project) has absorbed a visible share, alongside multi-provider platforms.
The cautious majority learned the real lesson of 2026: never depend on a single provider. Keep a funded backup on a different network. Our catalog exists precisely so you can switch networks without switching tools.
How not to get burned again — a checklist
Don't prepay more than a month of usage to any provider, no matter how big.
Check the backlink profile before trusting a provider: a spam-heavy profile (like the 49–69% above) signals bought reputation.
Beware of "same team" clones after a shutdown. If they can't restore your old balance, they can't prove they're the same operator.
Keep a second provider funded and tested. A backup you've never run in production is not a backup.
